Tools are made from hot-work steel (Uddeholm Orvar® or equivalent) and are then tempered to HRC 46–48. They are supplied by the tool manufacturer in untested condition. Testing and adjustment is conducted by the pressing plant tool department.
The purpose of tool adjustment is to control and check the materials flow through the tool, which has a significant impact on the final extrusion form.
Once the tool has been adjusted and approved, its surface is hardened to extend its life. This is normally done using a surface nitriding process or applying a titanium coating.
In general, the tool costs for extrusion tools are low. Roughly speaking, tool costs are 1/10 of those for die casting tools. The delivery times for tools are also very short. Standard tools are delivered 2–3 weeks after the order is placed. This has an enormously beneficial effect on the costs of a development project. Tool costs vary according to extrusion size and complexity.
In general terms, costs can vary from around SEK 8,000 for a simple tool producing a solid extrusion, up to SEK 100,000 for a complicated tool designed to produce a large hollow extrusion.
